Cuauhtinchan

At first Malinalco was part of the Matlatzinca culture. Years later, in the late 1400s, the town was conquered by the Aztecs. Once they started their domination, the Tlahtoani Ahuizotl (main Aztec leader) ordered to build one of the most impressive temples there, the Cuauhcalli (Temple of the Eagles or the House of the Sun). However, the whole ceremonial centre couldn´t be finished because of the “Spanish conquest”.

The Cuauhcalli

The Cuauhcalli or Temple of the Eagles is one of the greatest Aztec constructions and the only monolithic temple in America. It was carved out of the live rock on the mountain. The temple is shaped as the head of a snake, inside the temple you find carvings of eagles and jaguars.

Malinalco Town

The beauty of Malinalco lies not only in its wonderful archaeological site and its fantastic panoramic view but also in the delicious typical home-made food cooked with fresh local ingredients and of course in the XVI century convent that still has its original Tequitqui paintings.

The Convent

Built in the XVI century by the Agustins, the convent of Malinalco is one of the highlights in the town. Some of the importance of the convent lies on its murals. They were painted by the locals mixing the Spanish techniques. As a result, a new art, unique in the world, was born that is called “Tequitqui”.
